Onboard Camera and Tracking – Mick Schumacher drives Michael Schumacher’s debut F1 car!

Back in August last year we were invited to Silverstone to work with our friends at Skysports to film Mick Schumacher taking is father’s debut F1 car, the Jordan 191 for a spin.  Extreme supplied and operated both the F1 car onboard cameras and  tracking system.  For this we used our Extreme Riser rig attached to our performance tracking car, custom Audi A6 Allroad driven by our ProDriver.

For the umpteenth year in a row, Extreme Facilities and its highly experienced team will be working with numerous F1 teams to capture the first shoots from onboard cameras as the new cars hit the track for the first time in public.  Filming onboard F1 cars presents a unique set of challenges, which Extreme has come up with innovative solution to solve.  One such solution is our high frequency vibration dampening mount.  Last year our teams spent several days at Silverstone and in Bahrain.  Here’s a look back at the launch of the McLaren MCL35M at Silverstone last year, where Extreme supplied and operated the onboard cameras.

In September we had the pleasure of joining Martin Brundle and Damon Hill at Thruxton Park, for this Skysports production.   It was wonderful as always to work with these two fantastic drivers. And we had no idea that it was Damon’s first time driving a Ferrari, and what a Ferrari it is! Extreme Facilities supplied and operated both the onboard minicams and drone.

Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen take on the Best of British including a Spitfire! Onboard Minicams by Extreme Facilities

We had a fun day working at Goodwood with the Red Bull Racing F1 team. The shoot was Directed by our friend Mark McQueen. We spent many years woking Mark on BBC Top Gear, when he was the Series Director.  Our team installed and operated the onboard minicams for all the vehicles, including the F1 car and Spitfire.  The cameras were mounted using a combination of our custom anti-vibration mounts and our car suction mounts.

During the summer we had the pleasure of working with Nissan on this Ariya promotional piece. Using the Extreme Camera Tracking Car (actually our Tracking van on this occasion) with the Extreme Riser and our custom forward tracking rig allowed us to produce these beautifully smooth shots.

TRACKING RIGS

Extreme Facilities offer a variety of portable tracking options, for mounting to any vehicle.  The light weight custom Phoenix Tracking Rigs offers a fully stabilized Camera, Gimbal, and vertical damper.  Shooting upto 5.2k, options including, our ultra smooth motorized riser, for back, front or side mounting.  The whole package travels as check-in luggage in only 4 cases including all controls, rigging and camera system.

The Extreme Riser is a heavier duty motorized riser used with a Black Arm and Ronin 2, the system can carry cameras such as the Arri Alexa/Mini, Red Helium, Sony F55 and similar camera systems

Phoenix & Phoenix Riser

The Phoenix system can be mounted onto any vehicle, front rear or corner mounted; and packs down in flight cases to be transported. It can be used with just the dampening suspension arm, similar to a Black Arm, by 80% lighter, or with the Riser system as well. The Phoenix Riser is a lightweight 185cm motorized riser fully remote controlled. The X5s Camera can record both ProRes and Cinema DNG and is available with a wide selection of prime lenses and a remote zoom lens.

Extreme Riser

The Extreme Riser works with the Black Arm and a Ronin 2 to carry full size cameras such as the Arri Alexa/Mini, Reds’ & Sony F55.  Like the small Pheonix system it can be mounted to any vehicle.

Extreme Tracking Car

Perfect for mounting the Phoenix or Extreme Riser rigs, the 320BHP Audio A6 All-road 4×4 with adjustable damping and ride height, and sports diff makes a perfect tracking vehicle.
